What to Wear on Maui

Hiking, Sightseeing, & Exploring

When it comes to outdoor recreation on Maui, think comfortable and casual. Our island’s warm weather calls for shorts, T-shirts, hats, and sunglasses. It’s a good idea to bring pieces that are versatile so you can mix and match your outfits. (For example, a T-shirt can double as a beach cover-up). This will save you tons of space in your suitcase!

Comfortable footwear is also a must. Sandals or flip-flops are the best shoes for the beach, but you should bring socks and sneakers for hiking. Additionally, we recommend wearing a bathing suit under your clothes. Maui’s hiking trails often lead to hidden pools and spectacular waterfalls – especially along the Road to Hana. Feel free to take a couple of beach towels from the inn so you can dry off after your swim.

At the Top of Haleakala

No trip to Maui is complete without visiting Haleakala Volcano. The name of this massive shield volcano means “House of the Sun”, and its spectacular sunrises draw hundreds of visitors every morning. Because Haleakala’s summit is 10,000 feet above sea level, bundling up is essential. We recommend dressing in layers and bringing sweatpants, a sweatshirt, and a blanket to cuddle up with.

Out to Eat

From five-star restaurants to roadside food trucks, there are so many delicious dining options on Maui. Dreaming of a memorable meal by the water? Pack a pair of jeans and a long-sleeve sweater for those occasional windy nights. Oceanfront Hotels and restaurants also require that women put a cover-up over a swimsuit. Men will need to wear a shirt.

For a more laidback dining experience in Paia, Wailuku, or another small town, focus on attire that keeps you cool. In fact, many local women prefer loose, waist-free sundresses to shorts or pants because dresses allow more air to circulate. As long as it’s easy, anything goes!
