Less than 10 minutes from our inn is Iao Valley State Park, a dazzling, dramatic location with a rich history. In 1790, the valley served as a backdrop for the Battle of Kepaniwai. This three-day conflict was bloody, brutal, and vicious; but, it resulted in the unification of the islands. Today, the peaceful park serves as a reminder of the sacrifices that changed the course of Hawaii’s history. It’s even been said that the remains of the highest chiefs are hidden here. Take an easy drive to the Iao Valley to admire its cool streams and lush vegetation. You can climb to the top of the Iao Needle Lookout Trail for stunning views of Wailuku. Here, you might pause and say mahalo to the fallen soldiers. 2. Haleakala Volcano

However, visitors are welcome to admire the area’s sharp, jagged spikes (hence the name) and walk the labyrinth just north of Dragon’s Teeth.
