“I went to Maui to stay a week and remained five. I never spent so pleasant a month before, or bade any place goodbye so regretfully. I have not once thought of business, or care or human toil or trouble or sorrow or weariness, and the memory of it will remain with me always.”

Mark Twain’s words ring true to this day; the Valley Isle is not easily forgotten. Often, people come here on vacation and leave refreshed, healed, and completely changed. That’s because Maui is overflowing with sacred energy. Whether you seek out a Maui spiritual center or take a quiet hike through the jungle, you’ll connect with the island in a meaningful way.

Below, we’ve compiled a list of the most spiritual places on Maui. Decide which ones you want to visit and use our free Travel Guide to plan the rest of your trip!

Where to Go for a Maui Spiritual Experience

1. Iao Valley

Less than 10 minutes from our inn is Iao Valley State Park, a dazzling, dramatic location with a rich history. In 1790, the valley served as a backdrop for the Battle of Kepaniwai. This three-day conflict was bloody, brutal, and vicious; but, it resulted in the unification of the islands. Today, the peaceful park serves as a reminder of the sacrifices that changed the course of Hawaii’s history. It’s even been said that the remains of the highest chiefs are hidden here.

Take an easy drive to the Iao Valley to admire its cool streams and lush vegetation. You can climb to the top of the Iao Needle Lookout Trail for stunning views of Wailuku. Here, you might pause and say mahalo to the fallen soldiers.

2. Haleakala Volcano

According to harmoniousearth.org, “The Haleakala Volcano on Maui matches the Schumann Resonance at 7.8 cycles per second, the same resonance of our hearts and the natural state of Earth.” This massive volcano towers 10,023 feet above sea level, and the overwhelming sense of gratitude one feels at the top is undeniable. The site still holds spiritual significants for Hawaiians; ancient ritual sites have been discovered around the crater, and island folklore says that the demigod Maui lassoed the sun from the volcano’s summit.

Visit Haleakala National Park in the early morning hours for an epic view of the sunrise. Then, explore 33,365 acres of rainforest, volcanic craters, and vast wilderness. Miles of hiking trails offer the chance to connect with Mother Nature.

3. Makaluapuna Point

Makaluapuna Point, also known as Dragon’s Teeth, has signs that tell visitors they’re entering a wahi pana, or sacred spot. This ancient burial ground is believed to hold more than a thousand human remains and is not for public access. However, visitors are welcome to admire the area’s sharp, jagged spikes (hence the name) and walk the labyrinth just north of Dragon’s Teeth.
