Makaluapuna Point Is One of the Most Special Places on Maui

What Is Makaluapuna Point?

Makaluapuna Point, also known as Dragon’s Teeth, is one of the most unique places on Maui. As its nickname suggests, the lava rocks resemble the mouth of a dragon. Admire the sharp, jagged spikes that jut high into the air. As you walk, you’ll see a sign that explains the history of the area. It’s an ancient Hawaiian burial ground known as Honokahua Burial Site. Guests are asked to show respect when visiting this sacred spot.

Note: The point is subject to powerful waves and is covered by sharp, uneven rocks. We recommend wearing sneakers here.

Dragon’s Teeth Labyrinth

You’ll notice a large circle of stones just north of Dragon’s Teeth. This is a prayer labyrinth. Labyrinths have been around for more than 3,500 years and are used by many cultures around the world. When walking among the rocks, one loses track of time, direction, and the outside world, ultimately quieting the mind. Feel free to take a meditative stroll with Honokahua Bay as your backdrop.

Surrounding Beaches

After you explore Makaluapuna Point, spend some time at Oneola Bay or D.T. Fleming Beach. These beautiful, uncrowded beaches flank the point and are great places to sit and take in the view. Fleming Beach is popular with surfers and bodyboarders, and Oneola Bay offers decent snorkeling at both ends of the beach. (Diving is best around Makaluaouna Point. You may even spot a few sea turtles here!)

Directions

Dragon’s Teeth is near the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, about 45 minutes from our inn. Take HI-30 northwest and turn left onto Office Road just past mile marker 30. At the end of Office Road, take a right, and you’ll find the parking lot. Walk the Dragon Tooth Trail along the edge of Kapalua Golf Course to reach Makaluapuna Point.
