How to Spend a Day in Upcountry Maui

No vacation in Maui, Hawaii, is complete with a trip to Upcountry. Known for its rolling hills and soaring views, Upcountry Maui is home to ranches, botanical gardens, and farms. The region’s three towns – Makawao, Paia, and Kula – are great places to explore. Spend the day browsing boutiques and art galleries, or indulge at a popular restaurant. Wherever you roam, we promise your trip to Upcountry will be on you’ll never forget.

What to Experience in Upcountry Maui

1. Makawao

Situated on the slopes of the Mt. Haleakala volcano is Makawao, one of the top arts destinations in the United States. Makawao is the biggest town in Upcountry Maui and offers an eclectic mix of shops and art galleries. It’s also famous for its Hawaiian cowboys, or paniolo. Since the late 19th century, horseback-riding paniolo have wrangled cattle in Maui’s upland fields. Be sure to check out the Makawao Rodeo on Fourth of July, an annual Upcountry tradition that has brought locals and visitors together for more than 50 years.

2. Pa’ia Town

The historic town of Paia is located on Maui’s north coast. Once a booming plantation town, Paia played a vital role in Maui’s sugar cane industry. Today, its streets are lined with rustic, colorful storefronts run by friendly hippies and laid-back surfers.

Grab something to eat at the popular Mana Foods store, then head to Hookipa Beach, the windsurfing capital of the world. You might even see Willie Nelson playing an impromptu gig at Charley’s Restaurant & Saloon! Paia’s eccentric people and bohemian vibe make it a destination in its own right.

3. Kula

Kula is a quaint and rustic area that offers the best views in Maui. Its fertile fields grow much of the exotic produce served at some of Maui’s best restaurants. Kula is also a great place to take a farm tour. Pick a Maui onion at Oo Farm, or smell the sweet lavender at the Maui Lavender Farm. Don’t forget to visit the Kula Botanical Gardens where you’ll find beautiful blooming flowers like carnations, birds of paradise, and orchids.

If you’re a fan of wine, be sure to stop by Ulupalakua Vineyards in Kula. This Maui winery offers events, wine tastings, and tours of the historic estate. It’s the perfect place to end your Upcountry adventure!
