1. Ka’anapali | Upper West Maui

First up on our list is Ka’anapali Beach. While you won’t find many locals here, Ka’anapali is a popular place for mainlanders who want to get a feel for Hawaiian waters. It’s consistently named one of the best beaches in the United States, with three miles of soft, white sand and gentle waves. Take advantage of recreational opportunities like kayaking, whale watching, and swimming. Or, head to Black Rock on the north end of the beach for epic snorkeling. Black Rock is one of the top places to spot Hawaiian Green sea turtles on Maui; be sure to bring an underwater camera!

If you prefer to stay on land, spend the day at Whalers Village. This beachside shopping complex has stores, restaurants, and entertainment facilities. There’s even live music every Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m.!

2. Makena Beach | South Maui

Makena Beach, also known as Maui’s “Big Beach”, is another hotspot on the island. Here, you’ll find orange and white sand, a dramatic cliff landscape, and brilliant blue water. Big Beach is famous for its inclined shoreline and large shore break, making it ideal for skimboarding, bodyboarding, and bodysurfing. (Just be sure to obey the lifeguards!) Local Tip: Be careful when walking out to the sand. The trees on Big Beach have thorns that frequently fall to the ground, and going barefoot can be dangerous. We recommend waiting to take off your sandals or shoes until you walk past this area.

3. Pa’iloa Beach | East Maui

Is exploring a black sand beach on your bucket list? Check out Pa’iloa Beach in Wai’anapanapa State Park. This remote stretch of jet-black sand will make you feel like you’ve landed on another planet! It’s easily accessible from the Road to Hana and features caverns, lava tubes, and large sea caves. The views don’t hurt, either; at Pa’iloa Beach, bright green flora provides a breathtaking contrast to the cerulean-colored ocean. Spend a few hours here and enjoy hiking, swimming, and sunbathing under the Hawaiian sun.

As its name suggests, visiting Baby Beach is one of the best things to do on Maui with kids. You can find this calm lagoon at the western end of Baldwin Beach Park. Just be sure to plan your trip early in the day — the trade winds tend to pick up in the afternoon.

Local Tip: Need a break from the breeze? Head to the other end of Baldwin Beach. It’s sheltered from the wind!
