![]() The Pacific sun peaks through the canopy, illuminating an unexplored world full of rushing waterfalls, gorgeous Banyan trees, and incredible wildlife. Experience it all on the Pipiwai Trail. This scenic hike through some of Maui, Hawaii’s, most impressive terrain winds its way through Haleakala National Park, passing unforgettable landmarks along the way. It’s a spectacular place to explore, and it’s just a short drive from The Historic Wailuku Inn! Continue reading below for everything you need to know about the trail. Find out even more about the area’s best things to do when you request access to our free Vacation Guide. It’s full of local secrets! How to Get to the Pipiwai TrailThe Pipiwai Trail is located toward the end of the Road to Hana, about 12 miles past Hana town. The two-mile trail begins just across the road from the parking lot, and you don’t have to walk very far (about half a mile) before you come to the first set of waterfalls. The Falls at Makahiku plunge 200 feet over a cliff and cascade into the prehistoric-looking jungle below. The scene is breathtaking, and it’s just the beginning! More Must-See AttractionsThe Banyan TreeWalk a little further down the trail and you’ll come to another highlight – a gigantic banyan tree. With far-reaching branches and a footprint the size of a house, this majestic beauty is truly a sight to behold. Tree climbers and photographers will spend more than a couple minutes here. Bamboo ForestAs you continue along the trail, you’ll notice that the scenery changes from lush rainforest to thick bamboo. Listen to the hollow, percussive sounds of swaying stalks as you walk through the magical forest. (There’s even a boardwalk to help you avoid the mud). When the bamboo starts to thin, stop by the grove of mountain apple trees and enjoy a refreshing treat. Waimoku FallsOnce you pass the bamboo forest, you’ll see Waimoku Falls between the trees. This awesome waterfall thunders down 400 feet and will take your breath away. Even at a distance, you’ll be cooled by its refreshing mist and wind. Take a few photos and reverse the path for an easy downhill hike back to the parking lot. Local Tip: The trickiest part of this hike is right before the waterfall when you need to cross a stream. Don’t be afraid to get your shoes wet if you need to. It’s better to have wet socks than to slip on a rock and hit your head!
