Explore Hawaii’s Underwater World at the Maui Ocean Center

Maui Ocean Center, also known as the Aquarium of Hawaii, is the perfect place to learn about the relationship that exists between Hawaiians and the sea. The aquarium is home to native species like sharks, jellyfish, sea turtles, and fish. It even features the largest collection of live Pacific corals. Feel free to stroll through the aquarium on your own (a self-guided tour takes about two hours) or sign up for a Behind the Scenes Tour lead by an ocean naturalist. You’ll get an up-close look at what it takes to care for the animals, learn about Hawaiian culture, and assist with feeding at Turtle Lagoon and Nursery Bay. Guided tours are available daily at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Local Tip: Check the aquarium website for coupons, discounts, and packages to help you save on admission!

Activities & Events

If swimming with sharks is on your bucket list, you’re in luck! Maui Ocean Center offers an incredible shark diving experience for scuba-certified guests. Descend into the 750,000-gallon Open Ocean Exhibit and swim with sandbar sharks, hammerheads, tiger sharks, and reef sharks. If you aren’t a certified diver, you can watch from the exhibit’s viewing area which includes a 54-foot acrylic tunnel through the exhibit.

Are you looking for something a little milder? Head to the Makai Theater for a free movie screening. Or, sign up for an Aquari-OM yoga class and find your center amongst sharks, stingrays, and hundreds of colorful fish. Whatever your interests, Maui Ocean Center has something for everyone!

When your stomach begins to rumble, head to the Seascape Ma’alaea Restaurant for island-inspired cuisine and spectacular views of Maalaea Harbor. The menu features delicious dishes made with locally-grown ingredients, and gluten-free/vegetarian options are available. Seascape is a Platinum Certified “Ocean Friendly Restaurant” and serves food that is healthy, sustainable, and environmentally friendly.
